MVA Spotlight Kaity Emerson

In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, MVA is highlighting members of the AAPI community within the firm. In this MVA Spotlight, hear from MVA Intellectual Property Associate Kaity Emerson

Q: Describe what you do at Moore & Van Allen

A: I am an associate in the Intellectual Property group.  My practice focuses on IP, technology and commercial transactions and IP litigation.

Q: How long have you been at the firm and what motivated you to join?

A: After having been a summer associate with the IP group during my 1L and 2L summers, I joined the firm and am now a third-year associate. I was drawn to MVA by its reputation in Charlotte and beyond for excellence, commitment to attorney development, and in particular, its well-rounded IP practice. As a summer associate, I built meaningful connections with members of the IP team and looked forward to continuing to build those relationships, learn and grow as an attorney.

Q: Balancing a demanding legal career with personal life can be challenging. How do you manage to maintain a healthy work-life balance?

A: I feel my best and perform better when I’ve prioritized exercising and spending quality time with family and friends. This profession can feel all-consuming at times, so I’ve learned to carve out time during the week to do things that are important for my well-being. For example, at the beginning of each week, I schedule time on my calendar to explore run clubs in the area with friends and make dinner reservations for Friday night date night with my husband. Most importantly, I commit to those plans!

Q: What books or podcasts are you listening to right now?

A: I am currently reading Mad Honey by Jennifer Finney Boylan and Jodi Picoult.  I’m half-way through and highly recommend if you’re into murder mystery/suspense novels!

Q: What’s your favorite quote?

A: “Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.”

Q: Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

A: I recently picked up a new hobby: figure skating! I took lessons as a child, but after an embarrassing holiday program, I quit. I have always enjoyed watching figure skaters on TV and have long admired their grace and precision. So, a few months ago, I enrolled in an adult learn-to-skate class and have since started taking private lessons. While I am not destined for the Olympics, I’ve enjoyed the challenge of learning a new skill.

Q: What’s your favorite movie or tv show and why?

A: Any of the Real Housewives franchises. The show is fun, light-hearted, dramatic, and completely unrelatable. It’s easy to get sucked in and it gives me an excuse to shut my brain off and unwind for a few hours.
