Litigation Members Featured in Diversity Publication
Charlotte Litigation Members Valecia McDowell and Brian Heslin were featured in separate sections of the May/June 2013 Profiles in Diversity Journal. The May/June Profiles, titled “The Legal Issue,” was the first issue to be entirely devoted to legal topics, particularly diverse lawyers and firms that are “championing diversity and inclusion.”
McDowell was selected for inclusion in “The Lawyer Spotlight - Diverse Lawyers Making a Difference,” which highlights some of the nation’s most prominent diverse lawyers. In her profile, McDowell challenges fellow practitioners to be economically viable while serving the community. “The modern lawyer is too often driven solely by the tiny increments of time charged to a client. These practitioners forget their civic responsibilities, are irresponsible in their ethical obligations, and rarely spare the time necessary to fully weigh their clients’ concerns as they rush from one engagement to the next,” she writes. McDowell’s profile can be seen in its entirety here.
Heslin was selected for inclusion in “Profiles from Today’s Asian-Pacific American Leaders,” a section published annually in honor of May’s National Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. In his profile, Heslin shares about discrimination he faced during childhood and college. “… I see the strength and beauty of individual diversity and that our differences should be celebrated. I believe that our overall society is learning to recognize this as well,” he stated. Heslin’s profile can be seen in its entirety here.
